His Excellency, Ambassador Michiel den Hond The Royal Netherlands Embassy, Tel Aviv nlgovtel@012.net.il Dear Ambassador; One year ago, on June 26, 2008, a Palestinian journalist, Mr. Mohammed Omer, was returning to his home in Gaza after receiving the prestigious Martha Gellhorn prize accompanied by Dutch diplomats from your Queen’s embassy in Tel Aviv, as required by Israeli authorities, Upon reaching the Allenby Crossing, he was taken into custody by agents of Israel’s Shin Bet security service, beaten, tortured, and subsequently released where he was taken, by his Dutch escorts, to a hospital where he required surgical and hospital care for his injuries. You can read his account of the ordeal in “A Journalist Beaten - One Year Later” (http://www.agencegl Although an investigation was promised, to date, nothing has been done. It is now up to your government to do something about the situation. I ask that your government’s representatives in Israel pressure the Israeli government to bring the criminals involved in this case to justice. It was Dutch Government representatives that were witness to this horrendous act, it is their responsibility as human beings to help bring justice in this case and to help guarantee that this never happens again to anyone. Unless and until, governments insist that Israel be held accountable for its actions, in this case and so many others, there will be no improvement and innocent people will continue to suffer degrading & humiliating treatment, abuse, and torture at the hands of Israeli border guards. I urge you to contact those in your government, whose purview includes issues such as Mr. Omer’s, and insist that they take action to see that those responsible for his injuries are brought to justice and that changes be instituted to insure that similar events will not happen in the future. Respectfully, _____________
