I am sure that many of you have heard that several weeks ago an oil rig operated by BP (a big oil company) exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and creating an underground oil spill.
Right now I read that BP's latest try to close the oil leak has failed. To be honest, this does not surprise me. The BP engineers seem to be trying to combine technology A that was developed and has worked in situation B in situation C instead. To be clear, this underwater thing is almost 2 kilometers underneath the surface of the ocean. And with all respect, it's complicated to improvise with new stuff as you go along.
This episode may lead us to question whether we want the oil industry to take less risks in future energy projects.
For now, let's all hope that the terrible pollution caused by this disaster is handled efficiently and quickly by the proper authorities. |
