A fashion designer is a creative artist. .That is great when creating new innovative design :However, when it comes to business and moneymaking, there are a few points that better be addressed - 1. Plan ahead: set your field of expertise. Decide whether you design suites, baby cloth,
- underwear or dresses and stay focused. Create a line with in that field and do not be
- tempted to create "more" things that are outside the territory you defined.
- 2. Define your Target audience the best you can. It is easier to communicate with your
- customers and make them like you when you aim right. If you aim at "women", define how
- old they need to be to fit your items, what sizes they are, are you aiming at casual,
- fashionable, mothers, businesspersons or both. Once you know who they are, you will
- make the best items for them to like, appreciate and buy. And, you will be distinctive!
- 3. Have enough items to start: have enough items to create your line or collection. It does
- not matter if you are a dresses person or you design colorful socks... as long as you have
- few different designs or items that can reflect back on you as a fashion designer.
- 4. Have a personal mark: There are many fashion designers out there.
- You need to distinct yourself, become noticeable if not unique. Work on your footprint, that thing that
- will make your work stand out and be noticeable.
- 5. Learn& Master the production chain: Make sure you understand it well and in control of it.
- It is important that you not only have great designs but also have it in the quality you need, the right fabrics, and on time.
- If you do not feel you have, everything under control don't hesitate to ask for advice or help.
- 6. Pricing: Build pricing professionally and correctly. It is very important that you take under consideration all relevant costs.
- After all – it's a business... make sure you take into account – your time , cost of fabric ,manufacturing , transportation ,
- public relations , marketing , packaging , customer service , shipment and any other cost you directly have ,
- when setting the right price for your product so you know you sell at profit and not in loss....
- 7. Be competitive: remember, At least when you begin, there are many other fashion designers out there. Make sure that while creating your pricing structure correctly
- you also consider the consumers alternatives for buying a similar item elsewhere...
- 8. Be personal & present. A great advantage you have as an emerging fashion designer is that you are reachable. You have a name, a face, a personality.
- With you, unlike with big international brands, consumers can actually talk. You are not Nike or Coca Cola (yet...) you are a person.
- Your consumer can relate to you. Let them. Have a full profile with your resume', personality and picture. Anything you are willing to share.
- Personal information makes you human and accessible thus will make your relations with possible followers and buyers, easier.
- 9. Create Friends: Do the best you can to build a loyal customer's circle. Once you establish a group of consumers that are "loyal" to you , follow you and like what you do ,
- its much easier reaching out to a bigger crowd. Keep in touch with them, contact them, talk to them, you will be amazed how it can improve your business.
- 10. Be Vibrant and alive: Once you put your collection on the shelf, your work is only starting. Your customers need to see fresh things all the time.
- Changes, new products, new colors, different store arrangement, new content, even new posts and blogs you make.
- It will make their visit to your (online) store an enjoyable one and most important , they will come back again and again to check whats new.
