Last Tuesday I went to listen to Puccini, one of the most important composers in Italian opera after Verdi. The piece was “O mio babbino caro(Gianni Schicchi). Each time I hear it I like it more maybe it’s the language, which I admire, or just the theme that tells us that there is true love only we have to find it. Shakespeare has said in the ‘Merchant of Venice’ “But love is blind, and lovers cannot see the pretty follies that themselves commit”. We see a Shakespearean theme in Puccini’s piece maybe it’s because Puccini himself was influenced from Verdi who was influenced from Shakespear

In “O mio babbino caro” Lauretta, the daughter of Gianni Schcchi tells her father that she is not a little girl and that she wants to marry Rinuccio the man she loves and if not she will go to the Ponte Vecchio and will drown herself in the river Although I don’t speak Italian I speak Spanish I could understand the main idea, I could translate through the music the theme.
