The pretty girl, the criminal, the gun. These are the opening lines in À bout de soufflé (Breathless), by Jean Luc Godard. Watch the trailer. Even if you don’t know French the themes are timeless. It’s the story of small time crook that falls for a girl who (afraid of their love) gives him up to the police. The core of the film is Existentialism, the belief that each human being isresponsable for creating the meanings of his own life. I had to see this film 3 times before I got the genius of it (the first time I hated it). I know a lot of Israeli’s don’t like black and white films, old films, French films….. This film if seen 15 times (at least) will change your life.
But be warned Godard's philosphy is that cinema should make you think for yourself. That it shouldn't be easy to understand. So work for your money! |
