It will soon be time to look back at the War in Gaza. And judging from history you can already get a good idea on how it will look. If I had my way, I would hang close the Second Lebanon War and right above operation “Defensive Shield” in Jenin. This war like all other offensive moves we took against the Palestinians has cost many civilian casualties. Estimates will put them around 60% civilians and about 30% Children under 18. Is that acceptable? Of course not, this should not be the case in any war, regardless if you are fighting inside a civilian population against an Army that claims to be the defender of the population but does not protect it, still I will claim against a few Haaretz writers, that this is not an exception in wars around the world. That Israel did not break any records in its disregard to civilian casualties. Further more, the article that will claim that the civilians and kids who died were not predominantly used as human shields, is proving himself wrong by claiming that before the war is over and before anyone was able to enter and count the body count. Let us run a little memory game: how many civilian casualties died in Iraq, And how many in Afghanistan? Does anyone in the world remembers or even knows? Did anyone ever count? Here is a little link: http://www.rawa.org/temp/runews/rawanews.php?id=726 after you look at it, come back and tell yourself you remember such information from the “surge” the U.S.A did in Afghanistan. It all shows just one thing, it does not mean that what Israel did in Gaza was right. It does not mean it was wrong, but it shows that the world has a very short memory, also has a short attention span. Does anyone remember that body count in Kfar Kana in Lebanon (52 became 28 within a week) but the war was over so it did not matter any more. The world will not put this war on a shelf. Israel will and Palestinians will, and that is all that matters at the end of the day. The big question is where will the Palestinians put it? Do you think it will be placed next to war in 48 or 67? Will it be placed next to Sabra and Shatila? Will it be next to the intifada? Maybe Second intifada? in the minds of the children of Gaza, it will be hanging over the fireplace at the same place that Israelis hang the pictures of the ones they lost. In wars, in terror, in the holocaust, the place that reminds you every morning why you are getting out of bed, whether it is to avenge or whether it is to find peace and understanding, to seek the legacy of that one you once knew. These walls and those pictures are the real results of the war; they will tell us very soon whether it took us ten years ahead or twenty years back. The aims of the war were achieved the day it started; the equation will never be the same. |
