Here are a few tips in business english which i hope you wll find useful :
The verb – To Assess
A very useful word in our business vocabulary is the verb “to assess.” It means to estimate or to evaluate.
In general terms, we “assess” a situation or we “make an assessment”. More specifically, if we are unfortunate enough to have a small road accident, the insurance company will send an “assessor” to “assess” the damage to our car.
Interesting or Interested ?
The item itself (project, situation, possibility) is described in this form :
1. An interesting project.
2. A worrying situation.
3. An exciting possibility.
However, what you feel is described this way :
1. I was interested in the project.
2. The management is worried by the situation.
3. We are excited at the possibility.
Numbers
Exact numbers are not plural, therefore we say :
200 = two hundred, not two hundreds.
3,000 = three thousand, not three thousands.
5,000,000 = five million, not five millions.
When we speak generally, we use the plural form :
“We have hundreds of products which we sell to thousands of customers and we make millions of dollars.”
Warnings and threats
Warnings and threats should be worded diplomatically in the Passive form :
Wrong : If you don’t pay within 7 days, we will sue you.
Right : If payment is not received within 7 days, we may be forced to take legal action.
Let and Make
With the verbs “let” and “make” plus an object (me, us, you, them), we drop the word “to” :
Let me check that invoice again.
The supplier didn’t let us return the goods.
The Marketing Manager made them translate the material into Russian.
